History

The High Hurdles Therapeutic Riding Program was established in 1997 by a dedicated committee of parents, educators, and professionals committed to providing therapeutic riding experiences for children with developmental disabilities. Since our humble beginnings with a single borrowed horse and facility, we’ve grown significantly. Today, we operate from our own location, with 10 horses, and serve up to 40 riders each week. This incredible progress would not be possible without the generous support of our volunteers, who give their time and energy each day to help make our program a success.

1997 Where It Started
High Hurdles started on Allen Rd in Chaffee, Ny with the founder Judy Feine and a group of parents and supporters. They borrowed a horse and rented the facility to provide lessons to a handful of students in the area.
2006 Our Own Place
In 2006, a generous donation from Martha Garrish was provided to build a barn, indoor arena and pasture at our current location on Route 39 next to our Sardinia DayHab and group homes. This allowed us to expand and serve the community even further!
2012 Shelter!
An Eagle Scouts troupe led by Brandon Sullivan constructed a large run in shelter for the horses to escape the elements in the pasture. This was a huge step in improving the quality of life for our herd!
2017 An Outdoor Space
In 2017, a space was created to allow riders the freedom of riding outdoors as well as inside. The arena was constructed directly behind the indoor to allow every rider the opportunity to utilize it.
2024 and Beyond
We have lots of plans for the future, and the need is ever growing. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for High Hurdles!
